Mission statement

LeAF is an independent non-profit knowledge centre that actively promotes the implementation of sustainable environmental technologies. Through these technologies, environmental protection becomes a profitable part of industrial, domestic and agricultural activities.

Anaerobic treatment is considered to be the core technology for mineralizing organic matter in waste and wastewater streams, while producing energy (biogas), reusable water and nutrients. Anaerobic processes are environmentally friendly, relatively cheap and result in the conservation of fossil fuels. LeAF obviously promotes sustainable complementary technologies for achieving the required treatment criteria for the discharge and/or re-use of treated waste and wastewater and its constituents.

The other core topic of LeAF is the development and implementation of robust, affordable and sustainable waste and wastewater treatment technologies that can be applied on a local scale (decentralized sanitation). With these decentralized systems water and valuable components can be recycled. These technologies will contribute to the realization of Millennium Development Goal no. 7, aiming to reduce the number of people without access to safe drinking water and suitable sanitation

Position

Having close ties with Wageningen University, LeAF aims to bridge the gap between research and practical application in environmental technologies. As a result, LeAF cooperates with universities and research institutes, consultants, contractors and governmental organizations, to find solutions to questions and issues from both industry and society.
